This talk reports on an empirical study examining how English- and Korean-speaking learners of L2 Chinese process forward- and backward-looking classifier-noun (dis)agreement in Chinese. Native Chinese speakers and advanced English- and Korean-speaking learners completed an acceptability judgment task (AJT) and a self-paced reading (SPR) task, using sentences in which the classifier precedes the noun (forward-looking) or follows a topicalised noun (backward-looking). In the AJT, both learner groups, like native Chinese speakers, reliably distinguished agreement from disagreement in both configurations. In the SPR, native speakers showed clear disruptions at violations at the post-critical region in both configurations. Korean-speaking learners showed a reliable effect in forward-looking conditions but not in backward-looking ones, while English-speaking learners showed no effect in either. These results suggest that advanced L2 learners command the classifier-noun agreement constraint off-line but recruit it selectively during incremental processing. Based on our findings, we argue that L2 processing is “noisier” than L1 processing and that the L2 parser is likely to be affected by distracting “noises”, which will be elaborated in the discussion part of the talk.

袁博平教授1993年获英国爱丁堡大学理论语言学与应用语言学博士学位，现任17吃瓜 语言学特聘教授，剑桥大学语言与语言学博士生导师，剑桥大学丘吉尔学院院士，中国国家语委语言与健康研究中心学术委员会主任，国际中国语言学会副会长，国际期刊 Journal of Second Language Studies (John Benjamins) 主编。他目前同时担任若干国内、国际学术刊物的编委，其中包括Second Language Research, International Review of Applied Linguistics, Journal of Chinese Linguistics, Lingua,《外语教学与研究》，《世界汉语教学》等等。他的研究兴趣包括理论语言学框架下的二语和多语习得及双语与人类健康。他在国际主流学术刊物和中国重要学术刊物发表过近百篇论文，其中包括： Language, Linguistics, Transactions of the Philological Society, Second Language Research, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, Language Learning, International Review of Applied Linguistics, EUROSLA Yearbook, International Journal of Bilingualism, Lingua, Journal of Chinese Linguistics, Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism,  Frontier in Psychology, International Journal of Multilingualism, Journal of Psycholinguistic Research,《外语教学与研究》，《世界汉语教学》, 《现代外语》等等。他还编撰两部英汉-汉英词典（牛津大学出版社）。他的最新专著Interlanguage Grammars of Mandarin Chinese （《汉语中介语语法》）2026年7月由剑桥大学出版社出版发行。
